چکیده

Transmission experiments of different isolates of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) were conducted using established colonies of Aphis gossypii Glover, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), A. fabae Scopoli and A. craccivora Koch as vectors. The transmission procedure used provided an estimate of the virus transmission efficiency for each aphid species. Two different virus isolates/aphid clones were tested for each virus species using the most efficient aphid species as vector. A. gossypii was the most efficient vector of CMV (100 ± 0%), while M. persicae showed the highest efficiency of transmiting WMV (67.9 ± 28.5%) and ZYMV (96.4 ± 3.6%). Both WMV and ZYMV showed variability in their transmission efficiency by aphids. No significant differences were found in the efficiency of the two CMV isolates tested. No differences were observed in the vector transmission ability between clones of each aphid species tested. Results of our transmission studies together with previously known information on the temporal and spatial patterns of virus epidemics in melon crops in Spain suggest that CMV is mainly transmitted by a colonising aphid such as A. gossypii. In contrast, WMV is mainly transmitted by non-colonising transient aphid species such as M. persicae that alight on melon crops during late spring.

Biological and Molecular Characterization of a Korean Isolate of Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus Infecting Cucumis Species in Korea

Surveys of yellowing viruses in plastic tunnels and in open field crops of melon (Cucumis melo cultivar catalupo), oriental melon (C. melo cultivar oriental melon), and cucumber (C. sativus) were carried out in two melon-growing areas in 2014, Korea. Severe yellowing symptoms on older leaves of melon and chlorotic spots on younger leaves of melon were observed in the plastic tunnels. The sympto...

Short Communication Transmission Efficiency of Cucumber Mosaic Virus by Myzus persicae According to Virus Strain and Aphid Clone from China

Background: Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most important viruses infecting vegetables in the fields throughout the world. Transmission efficiency of CMV could depend on the variability of virus strain but also aphid vector species and/or clones. Materials and Methods: By sequence analysis, the coat protein gene of CMV strains from different regions revealed that the CMV isolates use...

Degenerate Primers Facilitate the Detection and Identification of Potyviruses From the Northwest Region of Iran

Background: Potyviruses are accounted for 40% of viral diseases of various crops including vegetables and legumes. Potyviruses can be transmitted through plant sap, seeds and many aphid species. Due to ease of spread of these viruses detection of such viruses are crucial as to the control of the incited diseases. Objectives: This study compared the efficiencies of two couples of primers in the...

Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Viruses are Differentially Affected by Parasitoids Depending on the Mode of Transmission

Relationships between agents in multitrophic systems are complex and very specific. Insect-transmitted plant viruses are completely dependent on the behaviour and distribution patterns of their vectors. The presence of natural enemies may directly affect aphid behaviour and spread of plant viruses, as the escape response of aphids might cause a potential risk for virus dispersal. The spatio-tem...

Localization, Concentration, and Transmission Efficiency of Banana bunchy top virus in Four Asexual Lineages of Pentalonia aphids

Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) is the most destructive pathogenic virus of banana plants worldwide. The virus is transmitted in a circulative non-propagative manner by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel. In this work, we examined the localization, accumulation, and transmission efficiency of BBTV in four laboratory-established lineages of Pentalonia aphids derived from four diff...
